On October 19, Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov paid a working visit to Kurgan State University. The visit was joined by Igor Manzhurov, Director for Development of UIREC.
One of the events was a visit to the youth laboratory “Promising Materials for Industry and Biomedicine”, operating under the project “Reconstructive Surgery and Express Implantation”. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Zaw Ye Maw Oo, Doctor of Technical Sciences, specialist in the field of ceramics.
Today, the laboratory, in cooperation with the National Medical Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after Academician G. A. Ilizarov and industrial partner “Enterprise “Sensor”, LLC, is conducting research on the development of methods for the production of implants made of “medical” titanium alloys, zirconium oxide-based ceramics, polymeric materials. Another important field of work is research of corrosion of metal surfaces in media modeling biological fluids, as well as methods of protection against it. The laboratory also looks for new substances potentially capable of antimicrobial activity.
According to Evgeny Ovchinnikov, Deputy Director for Research of the Ilizarov Center, the development of materials for implants and methods of their production are of paramount importance today. This applies, among other things, to personalized medical devices. Valery Falkov noted the importance of the fact that the laboratory is integrated into the Engineering Center of the University, which today is capable of engaging in the development and production of pilot and small batches of products, which will significantly accelerate the process of development to the stage of clinical trials.
